Productive variety
Catuaí: a productive variety from the Mundo Novo and Caturra family
Where Catuaí comes from
Catuaí is the result of a cross between Mundo Novo and Caturra. The name is associated with the idea of "very good" in the Tupi-Guarani language.
It’s grown on very different farms, from everyday lots to carefully selected specialty coffees.
Where it’s popular
Catuaí is very common in Latin America, especially in countries where productivity, compact stature, and adaptability matter a lot to farmers. You’ll see it often in Brazil, Honduras, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, and other origins in the region.
In practice, Catuaí is the kind of variety you’ll find both in comfortable everyday coffees and in beautifully worked specialty lots. It’s not a “flashy” name like Gesha, but it can be an excellent base for coffees that are sweet, clean, and easy to fit into a routine.
What it means for flavor
Catuaí doesn’t guarantee a single profile. It can support coffees that are:
- sweet and balanced;
- moderately acidic;
- with notes of chocolate, ripe fruit, or nuts;
- clean and easy to fit into a daily routine;
- more expressive when the processing is natural or carefully controlled.
